Clarkston Real Estate

In the 1830s, the Georgia Railroad built a rail line through what is present day Clarkston to connect the merchants of Athens with outlets in Augusta and South Carolina. The city is often noted as one of the first suburbs of Georgia, a popular area for early day commuters.

The City of Clarkston is located in DeKalb County and is approximately 10 miles northeast of Atlanta. It's a fairly small area comprised of approximately 700 acres or 1.1 square miles. Today the railroad still runs through Clarkston, connecting modern day residents to the city's humble beginnings. The city has several historic landmarks including the Clarkston Women's Club and Milam Park. The Clarkston Woman's Club was built in 1913 and is the third oldest Woman's Club building in the state of Georgia while Milam Park, which opened in 1927 is recognized as the first public park and playground in Dekalb County and is still open to area youth to enjoy.

Residents will find both North Dekalb and South Dekalb Malls convenient to the area. Stone Mountain, a nearby suburb, also has shopping, dining and many activities for family fun at the popular Georgia landmark, Stone Mountain Park.

Students in Clarkston will attend schools in the Dekalb County School System. The system encourages achievement and focuses on nurturing well-rounded students. Schools in the system have received various honors, and the sports programs have produced many champions. Clarkston High School is known for its diversity. By the year 2000, the local high school reported students from over 50 different countries. Many area students go on to attend Georgia Perimeter College as its central campus is located in Clarkston. Clarkston is also home to the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf. This exceptional school which was established in 1972 provides a stimulating learning environment to meet the individual needs of deaf students.

Homes are available from the low to mid $100s. Homebuyers will find craftsman style, bungalows, ranches and split level homes all at affordable prices.
